About
Thomas Gallant is the holder of the Nicholas Family Endowed Chair in Modern Greek History at the University of California, San Diego. From 2002 to 2007 he held the Hellenic Heritage Foundation Chair of Modern Greek History at York University in Toronto. Before moving to Toronto, he was professor of Greek history and anthropology as well as a member of the Center for Greek Studies at the University of Florida. Dr. Gallant received his Ph.D. in Classical Archaeology from the University of Cambridge in 1982. He has published five books and over forty articles; among his most recently published books are Modern Greece, Experiencing Dominion: Culture, Identity and Power in the British Mediterranean—winner of 2003 MGSD Best Book Prize-- and The 1918 Anti-Greek Riot in Toronto. A documentary film based on this book has just been released. His next book, Murder on Black Mountain: Love and Death on a 19th Cenury Greek Island will be published in 2010. He is the editor-in-chief of the ten volume Edinburgh History of the Greeks. He has received numerous grants and awards from agencies such as the National Science Foundation and the H.F. Guggenheim Foundation, and he is a past fellow of the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington D.C. He is a past President of the Modern Greek Studies Association.
