Thesis Title: Eavesdropping, foraging and dominance in keystone Neotropical pollinators: stingless bees

James Nieh

About

I am a behavioral ecologist interested in foraging decisions, and their ecological contexts and effects. Current projects include modeling the effects of handling time on responses to social information, studying effects of landscape change on stingless bees, and investigating stingless bee biogeography. I recently completed my PhD at UC San Diego with James Nieh. My thesis research investigated the role of dominance on heterospecific olfactory eavesdropping (on recruitment odor trails) by stingless bees. General research interests communication, foraging behavior, social information use, aggression and competition. As an undergraduate, I studied a visual communication system in stalk-eyed flies (Cyrtodiopsis whitei) in the lab of Jerry Wilkinson. Prior to beginning UCSD's PhD program, I participated in an internship at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., seeking to improve captive kori bustard (Ardeotis kori) breeding success through behavioral research.
